THE GRIFTERS – Jim Thompson, 1963

Hard-boiled fiction at its best. I bought it because I love the film (but really because I love John Cusack in the film).
No one is what they seem and they are all double-crossing each other in some way. The writing obviously owes a lot to Chandler and Hammett: ‘A blow in the guts can do that to a man, and Dillon had gotten a hard one’ but there’s nothing wrong with that.
