AS I WALKED OUT ONE MIDSUMMER MORNING – Laurie Lee, 1969

Lee’s autobiographical account of his wanderings around the UK and then in Spain is a joy to read. He evokes a lost time, just as he did in Cider with Rosie.

I know next to nothing about the Spanish Civil War, yet I am now inspired to learn more about it.

These anecdotes may be elaborated, or even fabricated, but they still convey a real sense of time and place – and heat. Definitely a book to read in the summer.
