CHILD OF HAPPY VALLEY – Juanita Carberry with Nicola Tyrer, 1999

Juanita Carberry was interviewed by James Fox during his research for White Mischief and he believed that she held the key to the solution of the infamous murder.

Carberry’s childhood was full of violence and brutality but it allowed her to observe the behaviour of Kenya’s infamous Happy Valley Set. She was due to give evidence at Broughton’s trial but was considered to be an unreliable witness and was not called to testify. Years later, she recalled the events which led her to be convinced of his guilt, although not the reason why she kept quiet about it for over fifty years.
This book is her memoir of what it was like to be a child in Kenya in the 1930s and 40s. It is an interesting read and contains more than just her take on the murder of Josslyn Hay, although it is that which makes it worth reading.
