WILDFLOWER – Mark Seal, 2010

This is the sad, sad story of Joan Root, who let her passion over-rule her common sense. By taking on the poachers and flower growers who were ruing the wildlife on Lake Naivasha, Kenya, she made herself a target and was gunned down in her own home.

The best part of the book deals with Joan’s early life as a wildlife photographer, working with her husband on programmes such as Survival and making documentaries for David Attenborough. She devoted her life to her projects and her husband and both ultimately failed her.
This is not a depressing tale, though. It is a story of someone who lived their life to the full.
