IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT- Muriel Spark, 1970

If anyone thinks that The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is the limit of Muriel Spark’s talents, read this and think again.
Such a short book, with so much to say and yet so much left unanswered.
When Lise takes a holiday, she is looking for an escape but the escape she has planned is a lot more permanent than we think at first. This is compulsive reading. It’s the sort of book I’d love to write.
I loved this book. It touched me. It is wise and it is brave and it encapsulated the essence of its author, whose autobiography I have read and have yet to blog about.
If you have bothered to check in here, and you want to read one extra book this year, make it this one.
