MISS SMILLA’S FEELING FOR SNOW – Peter Hoeg, 1992

Yes, it had to be! Knowing I had a long railway journey to face (if the train made it through the snow) I thought that this would be the perfect choice. I read it when it first came out but had forgotten much of it and it was worth re-reading.
I was disappointed with the inconclusive ending. There was Smilla facing up to the bad guys but I wanted to know whether she won or lost, lived or died. Was the murder avenged quid pro quo or was there a chance that the boy’s mother would know why he died?
The mystery unfolds beautifully and it captivated me the whole way between Nottingham and Exeter.
