THE GREAT WHITE PALACE – Tony Porter, 2002

I have been visiting Bigbury Beach and Burgh Island regularly since I was a child. The art deco hotel on the island comes dramatically into view as you follow the road towards the sea. When I was little it was in a state of semi-dereliction, used as holiday lets and a sad shadow of its former self.
This book tells how Porter and his wife bought it and restored it. It wasn’t easy and their trials and tribulations are recorded here, along with the anecdotes which made their task memorable.
Although they no longer own it, their work was responsible for returning it to the splendour of a bygone age.

This is a very interesting book, especially if you have visited the area, even better if you know it well.
