STANLEY The Impossible Life of Africa's Greatest Explorer – Tim Jeal, 2008

This book was a revelation to me. It overturned all my previous misconceptions. Stanley the bad guy turns out to be a lot better than most. Jeel presents a very thorough and balanced argument. He does not deny the death and destruction; he does not even seek to explain it away.  But he shows that most of the accusations laid at Stanley’s door are untrue or exaggerated. This leaves us free to admire the feats which this great explorer achieved.
