AMERICAN TABLOID – James Ellroy, 1995

American Tabloid is every bit as good as LA Confidential. Like the former, it rotates about the fortunes of a trio of characters as they lie, cheat, steal and kill. We end up liking the unlikeable, or at least obsessed with their fates.

This takes us, via many a hotel room, from the optimistic origins of the Age of the Kennedy’s to the failure of the Bay of Pigs and the road to Dallas.

The violence is graphic, hence this is not for the faint-hearted.
