BRICK LANE - Monica Ali, 2003

Brick Lane was a good read on a long coach journey. I enjoyed the story of how Nazneen forged a life for herself in the East End of London.

I was slightly perturbed by its attempt to deal with September 11th and its aftermath. It would have been better if it was, instead, more centred, less global; as the tale of a young woman who is relocated and dislocated and yet manages to create an identity which she is happy with is by far the most interesting part of the narrative.
