DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY – PD James, 2011

Not always a fan of sequels and re-writes, I must admit that I approached this with some trepidation.
However, I was very pleasantly surprised. PD James has retained the essence of Austen’s characters and has provided not only a further chapter but also an explanation for some of the sticky moments in Pride and Prejudice, for example how Lady Catherine knew of Darcy’s connection with Elizabeth. The central crime is not difficult to solve but that is unimportant; Wickham’s trial and Darcy’s response more than make up for it.  Austen aficionados are also rewarded with links to characters in her other novels such as Harriet Smith and Emma Knightly.
