CANNERY ROW – John Steinbeck, 1945

The boys want to do something for Doc but their best efforts to throw him a party go awry, as we are so often told, with ‘hilarious consequences’.

I found it far from hilarious, not least because of the fact that Doc collects ‘samples’ which turn out to be live animals he sells to laboratories.
