THE SHAPE OF WATER – Andrea Camilleri, 2003

This is where it began. Originally published in 1994 (I use the translated dates). Montalbano is introduced to the world. A new detective is hard to fashion but the idiosyncrasies of this one make him as fresh as Sherlock Holmes must have been in 1887.

This mystery, which reveals his genius for the first time, is sharply-plotted and is also an exercise in humanity.
