JUDE THE OBSCURE - Thomas Hardy, 1895

Jude Fawley is dead before he reaches 30 with his dreams in tatters. This seems like a different book to me now than when I read it in my teens. I think everyone should revisit the classics after a substantial period, a period which enables you to learn about living.
I devoured the whole novel on a six hour coach journey and was surprised at how little I had understood Jude himself on my previous reading, preferring at that point to believe that Sue was the strong character.

Hardy’s final novel is not an easy read but it is a great one.
