Here Fanny (Nancy Mitford herself) turns her attentions to childhood friend, Polly Hampton.
Polly’s problems, and Linda’s from The Pursuit of Love, are explained by the attentions of Boy Dougdale. Realising this, we are unsurprised when Polly, although reluctant to marry the young men chosen by her mother, weds her abuser. However, Polly endures and eventually finds happiness when those who have wronged her are forced to pay penance by Polly’s cousin, a sort of avenging angel, who wreaks havoc within the family.
Mitford’s wit is in full evidence, even with such a dark subject.
