THE SPIRE – William Goldman, 1964

This is one of the most disturbing books I have ever read but there is no denying its genius.
The image of the deranged Dean on top of the spire remained with me long after I had closed the
cover.
It is not an easy read. There is much to surmise and reading between the lines but decoding the symbolism is essential for a thorough understanding. For example what Jocelyn views as the angel behind him is actually the tuberculosis which is killing him.

Read with caution.
