COMING UP FOR AIR – George Orwell, 1939

The quote on the title page says it all (He’s dead, but he won’t lie down Popular Song).
There is much to love in this novel of broken dreams and shattered illusions.
George Bowling wants to repeat the past but he should know that is an impossibility.
I have to make it clear that I don’t like the glib way animals are treated. It’s not funny to hurt frogs and baby birds; even a young boy should know better.
But, apart from that, this was a joy to read. I actually read it on a long journey and it made the time fly.

It is social commentary in line with the best of Orwell’s essays.
