ROSS POLDARK – Winston Graham, 1945

Yes, yes, I have been inspired to re-read thee because of the new UK TV series starring the very wonderful Aidan Turner who does the role proud.
The first of the novels introduces us to our hero and more importantly to his integrity.
Older, wiser and returned from the war in America, Ross finds that his father is dead and he is now the owner of a crumbling estate and a worked-out mine.
He is determined to make a go of it all but his ambition is tempered by his compassion for the workers and his unrequited love for his cousin’s wife.

The start of a truly remarkable saga, so evocative of Cornwall – the greatest county in the country.
