THE HEART OF THE MATTER – Graham Greene, 1948

Catholicism cuts through the narrative, as with so much of Greene’s work. The concept of sin and redemption is reworked and given a new twist, turning this into a remarkable novel which makes you turn the pages just like when you read a thriller.
It is impossible not to feel compassion for Scobie even though you are aware, so aware of his flaws
