THE THREE EMPERORS - Miranda Carter, 2009

Carter’s is a fascinating account of the events which led to the First World War, told from the perspective of three of the countries at the heart of the conflict. But, even more so, it reveals the almost farcical lives of the power-wielding individuals with so much at stake.

Queen Victoria was obsessed with family loyalty but it was the family rivalry of her descendants, along with their own particular weaknesses, which played no small part in the destruction of peace in Europe.
