THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE – Stephen Crane, 1895

The Red Badge of Courage tells the story of the American Civil War from the perspective of a lowly Northern recruit, whose biggest fear is not death but desertion. Henry Fleming is terrified that he will run from battle until he realises that most do exactly that.
Stephen Crane never fought in war yet managed to convey the experience of a new recruit who has grave reservations about his ability to stand and fight when it mattered most.
