AMADEUS – Peter Shaffer, 1980

I love the film which was based on this but have only just got round to reading the original play.
It is similar in many respects, if coarser, but I think that it was developed for the screen in a positive way, taking the best of this and adding to it.

The character of Salieri is the touch of genius. Perhaps it is slander (or libel) but by taking a real-life person and making them into a totally different person gives this the edge of mystery which lifts it from the usual pseudo-biographical portrait we so often see.
