TOM’S MIDNIGHT GARDEN – Philippa Pearce, 1958

This is one of the best children’s books ever written. It is slightly eerie and mysterious but essentially a story of enduring friendship.
The ending makes me cry every single time I read it. Even with the superb build-up of events it is unexpected and so, so wonderful. Some characters are not what they seem, yet we have had all the clues.

I have read it many times and have not finished doing so yet.
